Shakespeare's Globe, located in Southwark, stands only 750 feet away from the original Globe, where Shakespeare's plays were performed during his lifetime. The original building was constructed in 1599 and rebuilt in 1614 after it burned down during a performance. The new building was demolished in 1644, and the one that stands today was only built after more than 350 years, in 1997. It nearly replicates the design of the original building, including its open-air setup. The complex also includes the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, an indoor theatre used in the winter months.
