About Brokeback Mountain

Wyoming, 1963. Brokeback Mountain. It’s a rural, desolate place where communities do all they can to fight for survival. Although it’s an isolated part of the world, it holds its own magic. After rancher Joe Aguirre hires cowboy Jack Twist and ranch hand Ennis del Mar as his farm’s sheepherders, Jack and Ennis spend every waking moment together.

As the days pass by, they form a deep connection, one that would go on to change their lives forever. But, Brokeback Mountain isn't their forever home. Once they've parted ways, Jack and Ennis must face up to their realities: marriage, children, security. Is this what they really want?

Don't miss the world premiere of the Brokeback Mountain play at @sohoplace this spring. Experience the film's magic in an intimate setting, interweaved with Dan Gillespie Sell's original country and western score.

Tell Me More

Did you know that Brokeback Mountain started out as a short story? In 1997, The New Yorker published Annie Proulx's cowboy tale to rapturous praise — it won a National Magazine Award for Fiction. Eight years later, Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal starred in the three-time Academy Award-winning Ang Lee- film adaptation.

This isn't the first time Brokeback Mountain will be performed on stage. Ivo van Hove directed a 2014 opera based on the lives of Jack Twist and Ennis del Mar in Madrid. However, this world premiere play marks the first Brokeback Mountain London appearance. Ashley Robinsons adapts Annie Proulx's story, joined by Everybody's Talking About Jamie composer Dan Gillespie Sells who creates an all-original country and western score.

What to Watch For:

  • Mike Faist will play Jack Twist. The Emmy-winning actor originated the role of Connor Murphy in Dear Evan Hansen. He also portrayed Riff in West Side Story, picking up a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
  • Lucas Hedges will play Ennis del Mar. The Oscar-nominated Manchester by the Sea actor made his Broadway debut in The Waverly Gallery.
  • The show’s composer, Dan Gillespie Sells, and the lead musician, Eddi Reader, hail from popular British bands. Dan Gillespie Sells was the lead singer of the rock group The Feeling, meanwhile the three-time BRIT Award winner Eddi Reader fronted Fairground Attraction.
  • Annie Proulx’s original Brokeback Mountain tale was one of 11 short stories in her 2000 collection: Close Range: Wyoming Stories. The stories were shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
