Sorry For Your Loss

New York, NY
This new comedy destigmatizes grief.

About Sorry For Your Loss

Like all the world's most insightful theatrical works, it began with a tweet.

On the tenth anniversary of a profound loss, comedian Michael Cruz Kayne felt compelled to describe his feelings of grief in 140 characters or less. Much to his surprise, more than 140,000 messages of support came back to him from all corners of the globe. Overwhelmed by the response, the Late Show with Stephen Colbert writer and host of "A Good Cry" created "Sorry for Your Loss," a sidesplitting, heartrending look at life — and death. This powerfully personal world premiere cuts through the platitudes, directly reaching out to anyone who has ever experienced loss — or will. So... everyone.

Sorry For Your Loss is a show to remind people, in a humorous way, they're not alone in experiencing loss and going through all that comes with it. Ten years after Kayne and his wife lost their young child, he opened up about his grief on Twitter for the first time and received over 140,000 messages of support. Those messages inspired Sorry For Your Loss off Broadway.

"Losing a child is not funny," Kayne said in an interview. "What is funny is all the crap that surrounds it, the funeral industry, the cards people buy you, the weird shit they say... The contrast between the endlessness that you feel and the complete stupidness of the rest of the world."

Kayne is a veteran of the NYC comedy scene, having performed in various comedy showcases around the city for years. He is best known for his work as a staff writer on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and a creative consultant for Billy on the Street.
