Here Lies Love on Broadway

New York, NY
David Byrne and Fatboy Slim team up for a new musical. Lea Salonga guest stars July 11 - Aug 13.

About Here Lies Love on Broadway

Get ready to dance! David Byrne and Fatboy Slim's acclaimed musical Here Lies Love is the hottest club in New York this summer, bringing a disco pop party to Broadway. Get Here Lies Love tickets on TodayTix now.

Fresh off the success of his Tony Award-winning theatrical concert American Utopia (and its encore Broadway run), Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee David Byrne returns to Broadway alongside big-beat pioneer Fatboy Slim in his Broadway writing debut. The duo’s pulsing disco tunes power the true story of Imelda Marcos, the former First Lady of the Philippines who lost her closest friends as she gained power — and soon lost that, too, amid the People Power Revolution. History has never been so dance-worthy, especially as it unfolds all around the audience.

Ten years after an Off-Broadway premiere run that The New York Times hailed as "insidiously infectious" and "ingeniously devised," join the crowd on the dance floor at this unique show revolutionizing what Broadway can be.

Tell Me More

Here Lies Love first appeared off Broadway in 2013, with direction by Alex Timbers and choreography by Annie-B Parson, who return for the Broadway run. The cast included Tony Award winner Ruthie Ann Miles as Imelda, Jose Llana as her husband Ferdinand, and Conrad Ricamora as opposition leader Ninoy Aquino; the latter two also return for Broadway. The limited-run production at The Public Theater won five Lucille Lortel Awards, three Drama Desk Awards, and an Obie Award, and the show subsequently returned for an encore run in 2014.

Byrne has been working on the musical since the early 2000s. He was first inspired by The Autocrat, a book by Polish author Ryszard Kapuściński about the fall of a separate Ethiopian regime. To him, the carefully curated personas of powerful world leaders reminded him of theatrical performances, so he wanted to write a show about a dictator’s rise and fall.

He later read that Marcos was fond of disco (and was even part of the New York disco scene for a time) and further researched her life. Byrne then combined the two themes into one concept, which became Here Lies Love in New York.

What to Watch For

  • Here Lies Love on Broadway is immersive, with the actors performing among and interacting with the audience. The Broadway Theatre has been converted into a club, where theatregoers will get to dance along with the show!
  • Byrne was inspired to make Marcos's story a disco musical because the real-life leader was into disco. She regularly went to nightclubs in the '70s and even converted the roof of her palace — and later, of her NYC townhouse — into one!
  • Timbers, Parson, and Byrne previously collaborated on American Utopia.
  • Imelda Marcos is still alive, at 93 years old, and her son Bongbong is the current Filipino president.
  • Byrne likes disco music, but the Talking Heads was definitely not a disco band. He said Here Lies Love "freed him to write songs for other people that he wouldn’t write for himself," according to the Associated Press.
