The Prima Facie play is a one-woman legal drama; Tessa is the only character on stage. She loves the rush of winning a case, even though she knows many of her clients are guilty, and undermining her opposition's weaknesses. She must reckon with that when she identifies weaknesses in her own case, from a legal standpoint. While playing this character, Comer also briefly acts as Tessa’s colleagues and family members.

Prima Facie premiered in Sydney, Australia — playwright Suzie Miller's home country — in 2019, where the show won multiple major awards from the Australian Writers' Guild. For Prima Facie’s subsequent London premiere, Comer won the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Actress.

Comer is best known for her Emmy-winning performance as Villanelle on the TV show Killing Eve, and for her film appearances in Free Guy and The Last Duel. Though the role of Tessa in Prima Facie existed before Comer was cast, Miller rewrote Tessa’s backstory to more closely match Comer’s working-class upbringing in Liverpool, England.
